The faint sound of a violin permeates the air. Courted by
the harmonious twang of a dulcimer, an angelic voice joins
in whispering a story passed down through generations –
a story of survival and self-sufficiency in spite of adversity.
Out of necessity, Appalachian culture has always embraced
the “simple pleasures” in life; and coffee is
no exception. North Carolina native and multi-instrumentalist,
Rick Brockner, concocts his own
home-brewed-music in reverence to the majesty of Black Mountain
located near Asheville. With the help of guest artists such
as string-man Jan
Johansson (who has played with living legends Vassar Clements
and Peter Rowan) and violinist Cora
Beth Bridges (who was only 16-years-old at the time of
recording), Rick invites listeners for a java-pouring-porch-jam.
Featuring rich music from modest origins, Black Mountain Brew challenges the popular notion that the best-tasting coffee
is found in the big city. Rick contends that it all depends
on with whom you share it and in what setting.
